Warszawa (in Polish) is the capital of Poland located on the Vistula river and, with 1.8 million inhabitants, its largest city. Being one big construction and renovation site today it is one of the fastest growing cities in Europe.
Warsaw's climate is continental humid. It has four seasons, although at times it may seem like it has only two - winter and summer. The average temperature is −2 °C (28 °F) in January and 18 °C (64 °F) in July. Temperatures may often reach 30 °C (86 °F) in the summer. Yearly rainfall averages 680 millimeters (26.8 in), the rainiest month being July.
Orientation
Historically, the right bank of the Vistula river was the first one to become populated, during the 9th or 10th century. However, the present city's central district, called Śródmieście lies on the left bank. The Old Town is fully contained within the borders of the Inner City.
The central point of the city is located at the intersection of Al. Jerozolimskie and ul. Marszałkowska, near the entrance to the Metro Centrum underground station. The quarter delimited by Al. Jerozolimskie, ul. Marszałkowska, al. Jana Pawła II and ul. Świętokrzyska, contains the main railway station Dworzec Centralny and the Palace of Culture and Science, which is a landmark visible from almost any location in Warsaw.
